Pocket

Globe Dye Works, Philadelphia PA

Noun: a shaped piece of fabric attached inside or outside a garment and forming a pouch used especially for carrying small articles; any isolated group, area, element, etc., contrasted, as in status or condition, with a surrounding element or group.

Verb: to conceal or suppress Idioms: in one's pocket, in one's possession; out of pocket, having suffered a financial loss; poorer.

This work takes the show's theme of Catagenesis and applies it to the garment’s role in rites of passage. Two performers in the space highlight the transfer of craft and knowledge between generations, an older woman cutting pockets from cast-off work smocks, providing them to the young woman to stitch together. The clipped smock pieces move through the space on a clothesline to the younger performer. What remains is a long wall of hanging skeletal smocks and the new garment, worn by the young woman, created by sewing the pockets together.
